Traffic & Transportation
TRAFICO Y TRANSPORTE
Mexico is a very large country, in which, however, you do not have to worry about the distances. The bus network is very well established and you will be surprised how luxurious and comfortable - and also affodrable- the first-class busses are! They provide large legroom, a toilet on board and manz of the providers even distribute snacks and drinks and have internet access on board. During the journey they mostly show international movies in English or Spanish. You get the bus tickets at the bus stations but you can also make an online reservation. There are bus stations in every bigger city, but you should plan to have to take a taxi to your hotel, since mostly the buses do not stop in the centers of the cities. The second-class busses are a bit cheaper but mostly provide similar service. For both classes we recommend to take warm clothing with you. The air conditioning make the buses quite cold at times. The most common bus lines are Primera Plus, ADO, Estrella Blanca.
For long distances the most comfortable and fastest mean of transport is obviously the airplane. Domestic flights are comparatively cheap, comfortable and modern. The most common airlines are Aviacsa, Mexicana and Aeroméxico. If you book your trip with us that contains a national flight, you will probably have the pleasure to deal with one of these airlines. In total there are more than 50 airports that are connected to Mexico City Airport.
To travel by train is not quite common in Mexico. Except of two trains, which are especially established for tourists there is only use for trains in the cargo sector. One of them drives in the Copper Canyon from Los Mochis to Chihuahua and the other is the Tequilaexpress going from Guadalajara to Amititan, including a taste of tequila and a visit of the home city of this famous drink.
Who wants to hire a rental car should be aware that the Mexican traffic is, especially in major cities, quite dangerous and needs a lot of concentration and good driving abilities. But on the other hand it's a good possibility to get to know the country individually. For your own safety you should get informed about the concequences of an accident in Mexico. We recommend a fully comprehensive cover. The legal age to drive a car is 21 in Mexico and a European drivers license is sufficient. The streets and highways are of good quality and road holes are rare and mostly in side roads. Nevertheless you should always be careful and be overall aware of the "Topes", little bumps on the streets, which are there to regulate the speed and which are sometimes quite difficult to see. If you use toll roads you have to pay a certain amount varying depending on the area. The toll ticket also means that you are insured during your drive on the street in case something happens caused by the bad condition of the road. That's why you should keep the ticket in every case.
