Calling from the hotel phone is mostly very expensive. To make long distance phone calls in Mexico, you are better off getting a telephone card, which is sold in every phone shop and on little markets and all kinds of kiosks, which are to be found everywhere. If you have friends in Mexico, try to get a prepaid card of TELCEL, which makes it a lot cheaper to call inside and outside of the country. Mexico is not missing out on phone booths. Most of them are situated close to airports and bus stations. Nowadays there even are booths for credit cards. Many foreign phones also work in Mexico. You only need a triband mobile phone and the disadvantage is that the use is comparatively quite expensive. You even have to pay for receiving phone calls.
Internet-Cafés are a dime a dozen in Mexico. Especially in bigger cities it's not a problem finding well equipped Internet-Cafés. Most of them have even cameras and headsets what provides a very cheap form of communication. The price per hour depends mostly on the amount of tourists in the area. It's definitely worth to look for a Internet-Café which isn't located close to the hotel area, for example at www.amcc.org.mx.
